Need Assessment Visits: The 2010 Pakistan floods began in July 2010 following heavy monsoon rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan regions of Pakistan and affected the River basin. At one point, approximately one-fifth of Pakistan's total land area was underwater. Apart from the flood waters, the heavy rains equally affected the rural and semi-urban areas of many districts. The rains badly destructed the houses of many and place them on the roads. Salik Town, one of the very backward areas of Faisalabad was highly affected by the continuous rainfalls of July-August, 2010. It left the people helpless in their own homes. |
The need Assessment team of Quit Drugs Treatment Organization visited the area with the local representatives of Affected areas of Faisalabad. Their houses were collapsed and few beddings and utensils were there only possession. We observed that the majority of the people were brick kiln workers who works from morning till evening on very less wages .Most of the people have houses comprised of 1 room only. But the cruel rainfalls have snatched their shelter from them. And the thing which adds misery to their life was that the brick kilns were not operative due to stranded water. In those particular days, they have no way out to earn their living expect to live in an extreme poverty. But the thing which adds misery to their lives in this year was the destruction of their houses due to the heavy rainfall which leave them helpless.
We considered their genuine need and decided to work with them. Our target was to identify the neediest people with the special attention on the poor brick kiln workers whose houses got affected by the rushing water fall and the disable people. The team visited the affected people in each area, held meetings with them and assessed their needs. We recorded the interviews and the stories of the affectees.
The needs that considered most urgent were the food items, cooking utensils, tents, mats and hygienic kits etc.
